Junjie Ma

Junjie Ma (马骏杰, also known as Jeffrey) is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Computer Science at George Mason University, advised by Dr. Zhicong Lu in the DEER Lab.

Academic Background

Junjie Ma received both his Master's degree and Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where he was advised by Dr. Loren Terveen and Dr. Stevie Chancellor.

Research

His research sits within Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), with a focus on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) and Human-AI Interaction. He studies personalized narrative mechanisms for Embodied AI, with core themes spanning Expression Mechanisms, Cultural AI, and Multilingualism. See Research for the full statement.

PhD, Year One (2025–2026)

During his first year in the Ph.D. program at George Mason University, Junjie Ma established his research focus on Human-Robot Interaction and began building connections across the field. In April 2026, he was invited to showcase his HRI research at Microsoft's "Bring Your Family to Work Day" at the company's Reston office. The following month, he presented his work at the FIGX Lab at the University of Maryland, College Park. Also in May 2026, he joined the STIP AVATAR project at George Mason University as a Graduate Research Assistant, contributing to the development of an adaptive VR and mobile therapeutic system for behavioral health relapse prevention.
